Pan Am flame lights up Montreal

MONTREAL – The Pan Am Games Torch Relay made its way through Montreal Sunday, ahead of the Toronto games set to begin on July 10.

The starting point for the relay was the 1976 Summer Olympic’s cauldron at the Olympic Stadium.

Torchbearers were scheduled to stop at many sites across the city, including the Maurice-Richard Arena, City Hall, Lafontaine Park and the belvedere on Mount Royal.

Mayor Denis Coderre was on hand to greet the torchbearers at City Hall and expressed his pride on Twitter.

The torchbearers included former acrobatic skier and two-time Olympic champion Alexandre Bilodeau, Paralympic swimming champion Benoit Huot, speedskaters Marianne St-Gelais and Charles Hamelin, and Marcel Aubut, Canada’s Olympic Committee president.

The Pan Am Games Torch Relay is a 41-day journey bringing the spirit of the Games to more than 130 communities.
