Okanagan extreme heat tips from Health Canada

Jeff Martin/Global News

Many Okanagan residents have been enjoying beaches and hot sun for several weeks now, but with summer officially upon us and things only expected to get warmer; Health Canada has issued some tips on how to protect yourself and your family in the extreme heat.

“Your body is not used to (not acclimatized to) extreme heat at the beginning of the summer,” according to a Health Canada release sent out Wednesday afternoon. “If you are physically active, you are also not acclimatized if you don’t exercise regularly during hot weather.”

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Health Canada says while hot weather and extreme heat can put everyone at risk from heat illnesses, health risks are highest older adults, infants and young children, people with chronic illnesses and those who exercise or work in the heat. You can click here for more tips from Health Canada.

“Heat illnesses can affect you quickly and can lead to long-term health problems and even death,” according to Health Canada. “They are mainly caused by being over-exposed to extreme heat especially if you are doing too much for your age and physical condition.”

Global Okanagan meteorologists Duane English and Wesla Wong predict a very hot weekend ahead in the Okanagan.

“The heat is on this weekend when this ridge continues to strengthen over the next several days . Many areas will see temperatures at least ten degrees above seasonal this weekend.”
