Red Bull 400 vertical race coming to Whistler

WATCH: Next month the Whistler Ski Jumping site hosts the Red Bull 400 vertical challenge. Jay Janower reports.

Think the Grouse Grind isn’t enough of a challenge? Then how about running up a hill built for ski jumpers.

The Red Bull 400 is a race that, as its website states, “challenges runners with 400 vertical metres of gain from the bottom of the ski jump, straight to the top.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Next month marks the first time the Red Bull 400 has brought its 400-metre vertical climb to North America. The first race–featuring mountain runners, track athletes and stairway runners–was held in Austria back in 2011 and spread across parts of Europe. Coming to Whistler, home of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, was a no-brainer.

The Whistler Red Bull 400, which takes place July 19, is limited to 400 entries. Participants can run individually or as part of a relay team. There is also a relay category for police, firefighters and EMS workers.
