MONCTON – The wife of one the RCMP officers who was shot and killed in June of last year says she continues to draw strength from positive community events like the 3 Km for 3 Fathers Run.
Nadine Larche’s husband, Const. Doug Larche, was one of three officers who died in the shootings.
Constables Dave Ross and Fabrice Gevaudan were also killed. Another two other officers were badly wounded.
Sunday’s event, which coincided with Father’s Day, was organized to honour their sacrifice.
“It’s a positive day for me and the girls and somewhere to be on Father’s Day,” she said. “It’s beautiful to see the support of the community.”
This is the event’s second year and about 2,000 people signed up to participate.
Larche said the event is especially touching because her husband enjoyed running.
“He would often be seen running on these very trails we’re running on today,” Larche said.
Armand Doucet used to run with Const. Larche and said the family event will continue to grow.
“We’re looking at growing in the next few years,” he said. “We’re looking at different possibilities either relays or maybe a 30 km or 15 km we’re not sure yet.”
Money raised during the event will go towards scholarships at the city’s six English and French high schools.
Students showing bravery courage and leadership will be eligible for the award.
It’s expected to be offered to students in 2016.
