Former mayor Jean Doré lies in state at city hall

WATCH ABOVE: Public visitations were held Sunday for former Montreal mayor Jean Doré. Doré passed away from pancreatic cancer last week at the age of 70. A civic funeral will be held Monday at city hall.

MONTREAL – Hundreds lined up at city hall to pay their respects to former Montreal mayor Jean Doré.

Visitation started at 10 a.m. and lasted until 8 p.m.

Doré was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2014, and died of the disease last Monday, at the age of 70.

In an interview in 2014, he said he accepted “the fact that I’m going to die.”

The 39th mayor of Montreal, Doré came to power in 1986 until 1994, and is being remembered for ushering in an era of democratic reforms.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre expressed hope that many would come and say a final thank you to a well-deserving man.

Dore’s funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at city hall.

Members of the public will be able to view the ceremony via a large screen at Place Vauquelin, adjacent to city hall.

Montrealers wishing to pay hommage to the former mayor are invited to donate to the Fonds Jean Doré for research on pancreatic cancer.
