CALGARY – A young Calgary hockey fan is earning high praise for a Flames concept arena video he posted on YouTube, that’s garnered over 1,900 views in six days.
“I built this off the top of my head,” said Grade 9 grad Noah Brodeur.
The computer animation starts with an exterior and the arena’s wall of windows, and moves to an open concourse design inside.
“You could see people walking around the arena from the outside,” he said. “Minimal lineups for washrooms, transportation up and down the arena, vendors. And I made it so that when you walk into the arena you can immediately go up to whatever level your seats are on.”
One of the most unique parts? The new roof.
“I’ve built it so that they could open it – it could be a fabric roof that they could retract.”
Brodeur said he was inspired by the Saddledome’s shortcomings.
“I love the Saddledome but the concourses are small, it takes a lot of work to get up to the top of the dome…So I set out to try to make a better design.”

Brodeur’s mom says he started by researching other venues.
“He knows everything about every arena that exists, and has existed,” said Jill Brodeur. “It’s a passion of his.”
“He’s always been building – it started from Lego and moved on from there. And drawings—perspective drawings—that was always something he liked to…It’s just been who he is inside.”
And if the Flames come knocking for a closer look at the design, Brodeur says he’s happy to share.
“A hundred per cent happy—they can have it.”
