Great golf for Father’s Day: Gadgets, gear and glorious courses

Already considered the best course in Canada—and among the best in the world - Nova Scotia's Cabot Cliffs opens this July. Cabot Cliffs

Looking to get dad that special piece of equipment that will keep him interested or help him hit another fairway? These days there are some very intriguing options for the dad who hits the links on the weekend—some of which come in the form of clubs, and some that use the latest in technology to help you improve your game.

Great gadgets

Zepp Golf: A simple swing aid that clips to the back of your golf glove and registers most of the key details of your swing through Bluetooth, Zepp is one of the leaders in the wireless instruction space. With an easy-to-use interface on your mobile device, this is like having your own swing coach in your pocket. It can also be used for practicing away from the course, which makes it essential. You can find Zepp at most Apple stores for $149.

Arccos Golf: Launched last year, Arccos was initially created by clubmaker Callaway, but has captured a lot of attention given its ease of use. Available at Best Buy for $379, Arccos is actually 14 wireless sensors that attach to the end of a club grip. Once paired using Bluetooth to your iPhone, Arccos provides real-time details on every shot you hit throughout a round. That means when you think you hit the ball 300 yards like a tour pro, you’ll likely find out you average closer to 220 yards. However, it provides a lot of valuable feedback. Smart and engaging, Arccos is an industry leader.

Great clubs

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Callaway XR driver: In a year when seemingly every equipment company is focused on adding more speed to their driver (see Ping, Titleist, etc.) the winner might be Callaway, with this $399 driver.

No, there are no movable weights, no fancy rod that changes the centre of gravity. Instead the club is built for speed, and Callaway says it can add up to 5 miles per hour in ball speed. My experience? It is the best driver I’ve tested in recent memory, offering the forgiveness of Ping’s outstanding G30, and the distance of TaylorMade’s R15.

Great kicks

Nike Lunar Control 3: Built with the input of World No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy, the little Irishman with the big swing, Nike’s Lunar Control 3 is exceptionally light and offers the stability need for players who hit the ball hard. What do you mean your dad doesn’t go at it like McIlroy and the last time he smacked one 300 yards it was in his dreams? Well, if that’s the case consider this—the Lunar Control 3 shoe takes what was already a very comfortable line and increases it further. Find them at $179.

Great golf trips

Cabot Links: Want to really thrill your dad? Find a way to get him a round at Cabot Cliffs, the new Nova Scotia course that opens this July. Already considered the best course in Canada—and among the best in the world—by many pundits, this seaside gem will set you back $195. Will it be worth it? I’m betting he’ll be talking about tackling the incredible 16th hole, with its shot across a rocky beach to a green perched on a cliff significantly longer than he’ll discuss that tie you were considering for him.
