Saskatchewan’s inflation rate up 1.5% in May

OTTAWA – Saskatchewan’s consumer price index rose 1.5 per cent in May according to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada. That was the largest increase in the country.

Excluding energy costs, the inflation rate in the province was 2.7 per cent last month.

According to the agency, prices in Saskatchewan for natural gas remain higher than a year ago, while every other province has posted year-over-year declines. Prices are up 15.0 per cent from May 2014.

The cost buying a passenger vehicle was up 3.4 per cent, the second largest increase next to the 3.5 per cent increase in Alberta.

Food costs were up 3.7 per cent, with meat prices increasing 7.7 per cent and fresh vegetables up 7.4 per cent.

On the plus side, the province’s gas index decreased more than the national average, down 22.4 per cent from a year age.

Nationally, the CPI rose 0.9 per cent. Excluding energy, the national inflation rate was 2.2 per cent in May.
