WINNIPEG – The smoke from distant forest fires that clouded Winnipeg skies Monday and affected air quality will make a comeback later Tuesday, Environment Canada says.
The agency issued another special air quality statement for the City of Winnipeg Tuesday morning. It was lifted later Tuesday afternoon.
Smoke from fires in Saskatchewan is already spreading into The Pas, Flin Flon and Swan River and “will drift southeastward over most of Southern Manitoba through the remainder of the day,” Environment Canada said in the statement on its website.
“Much of this smoke will be aloft, but at times it could affect areas near the ground giving skies a hazy appearance and resulting in some deterioration of air quality.”

On Monday, the horizon was barely distinguishable and the sun a dull red colour as the haze blanketed the Manitoba capital. Thunderstorms helped clear the air late in the day and the skies appeared normal Tuesday morning with a slight haze on the horizon later in the afternoon.
Environment Canada’s air quality index reached 5 on its scale of 10 Monday, indicating moderate risk for people with pre-existing breathing problems due to the particulate matter in the air.
