City of Moncton encourages residents, province and country to turn on porch lights

WATCH ABOVE: Moncton mayor George LeBlanc asks for residents to turn on their porch lights in memory of last year’s shooting.

MONCTON – The city of Moncton is encouraging residents, New Brunswickers and those across Canada to turn on their porch lights this evening, as they did a year ago.

“Last year we turned on our porch lights,” Mayor George LeBlanc said on Thursday. “Tonight, I ask all of you to do the same thing.”

The shooting that killed Constables Doug Larche, Dave Ross, and Fabrice Gevaudan sparked a manhunt in the city’s north end where the officers were killed.

During that manhunt, Moncton residents were asked to keep their porch lights on so there was more light while officials searched during the night.

But in solidarity, people around the world left their porch lights on throughout the night of June 4, 2014.

During a ceremony remembering what happened, officials shared the memory of seeing porch lights on throughout the city.

“All across the country and the world, in solidarity with Moncton, thousands turned on their porch lights,” said Barbara Quigley, with the city of Moncton.

Quigley and LeBlanc asked residents to turn their porch lights on in memory throughout Thursday evening.
