The New York City police department is investigating after a transgender woman was pushed onto the subway tracks by a man reportedly “acting erratically.”
Authorities are investigating the incident as a hate crime, according to NBC.
The man was reportedly walking along the subway platform when he asked the woman what she was looking at.
Security footage released by authorities shows the man pulling what’s alleged to be a bottle from a nearby garbage can.
Authorities say he threw it at the woman before pushing her onto the tracks and running off as a group of commuters helped the woman up, according to CBS in New York City.
“It’s scary. I mean, what would go through someone’s mind to do that?” Stacy Steven told CBS. “I mean, you just never know who or what you’re dealing with, or who you’re going to run into.”
The unidentified woman was taken to hospital where she was treated for scrapes and bruises.
Violence directed at transgender people is common; according to Trans Equality Canada, 74 per cent of transgender youth in Canada reported experiencing verbal harassment and 37 per cent reported experiencing physical violence.
