WATCH: Bystanders come together to rescue boy trapped under car

TORONTO – The most terrible of circumstances can sometimes bring out the very best in a neighbourhood.

That’s a phenomenon the city of New York is no stranger to, and it was on display once again Monday afternoon after a runaway car slammed into a four-year-old boy and left him trapped and pinned underneath.

Surveillance cameras show bystanders and pedestrians rushing to the scene, hoping to free the trapped boy.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The neighborhood actually got together and tried to pick the car up to get the child out,” one of the Good Samaritans, who did not wish to be identified, told CBS New York.

“He was very nervous. He was crying. Everything happened so fast. All I remember was just trying to get to the child.”

The first person on the scene was the boy’s horrified grandmother, who had been shopping in a nearby store.

The incident occurred at 2:20 p.m. on Seventh Avenue between 51st and 52nd streets in Brooklyn, New York.

The same surveillance camera captured the moment the fast-moving sedan jumped the curb, took out a tree, and slammed right into the boy.

Once the Fire Department of New York arrived on the scene, rescuers were able to free the trapped boy from underneath the car.

Both the boy and the driver were transported to Lutheran Medical Center, and both are expected to make a full recovery.
