WATCH: Amazing sight as fish take over New Jersey street

WATCH ABOVE: Lorenzo Davis says he fishes regularly and couldn’t believe his eyes Monday.

TORONTO – A strange sight Monday morning in New Jersey after a small lake overflowed and more than just water flooded the streets.

Lorenzo Davis is a regular angler at Weequahic Park in Newark. When he heard that his favourite fishing hole was underwater he went to check it out.

“I’m out here every morning, six o’clock for the last two months fishing, so I’m a regular fisherman out here,” he told WABC. “That’s why I came to assist them. This is my backyard.”

Carp and possibly other fish were all over at least one street, struggling to stay alive and swim in the shallow water that had pushed them out of their natural habitat.

Video recorded by ABC shows the amazing scene as it happened; residents scrambled to try and return the fish to the lake. Fishing rods were tossed aside and replaced with large nets, bare hands, plastic bags, buckets – one man even tried to use an umbrella.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

But anyone hoping for a free dinner were surely disappointed after the City of Newark told residents to avoid eating the flood victims.

“This is a dangerous practice and residents are urged to refrain from trapping, catching, and eating any fish caught on the streets,” Department of Health and Community Wellness Director Dr. Hanaa Hamdi told NJ.com.

“We don’t have any certainty what the danger is. But it is a dangerous practice,” she added.
