WATCH: Peter MacKay’s son Kian adorably interrupts Stephen Harper

It was a reflective, sober moment when Prime Minister Stephen Harper took the dais to extol the virtues of his cabinet minister Peter MacKay in Nova Scotia Friday afternoon.

MacKay was about to announce that he would not be seeking re-election in the next federal election.

“You know about the outstanding public servant. For 18 years, Peter has served the fine people of central Nova through thick and thin,” said Harper.

But the moment was broken when MacKay’s two-year-old son Kian began to babble, audibly overtaking the prime minister’s speech.

“And he’s had his hands full!” Harper remarked, gesturing towards the toddler as the crowd laughed.

Unable to continue as the boy generated his own captive crowd, Harper was forced to pause as Kian was shooed out of the room by his mother, human rights activist Nazanin Afshin-Jam.

MacKay said that he was leaving public life to spend more time with his growing family as he and Afshin-Jam are expecting a daughter.
