Wildfire situation improves, fire ban still in place for northern Sask.

SASKATOON – The wildfire situation in Saskatchewan has improved significantly over the past couple of days. Officials with the Ministry of Environment said during a conference call Friday that cooler temperatures and some rain have helped ease the extreme conditions.

As of Friday afternoon, 17 wildfires were burning in the province. There have been 257 wildfires so far in 2015 compared with 143 at the same time last year.

In the White Fox area, people who had been evacuated were able to return home.

Even though conditions have eased, a fire ban remains in place for northern Saskatchewan, including provincial parks, recreation areas and the provincial forest.

Bans also remain in place for Corman Park, the city and rural municipality of North Battleford and Meadow Lake.
