Quebec City mother and educator faces sex charges

WATCH: A 36-year-old mother of four and daycare educator in Quebec City is facing charges of luring a 12-year-old boy at her school over the Internet. Global’s Caroline Plante reports.

QUEBEC CITY – A 36-year-old mother of four and daycare educator at La Farandole elementary school in Quebec City is facing charges of luring a child.

Mélanie Roy was arrested at her home in Charlesbourg on charges she spoke to a 12-year-old male student via Facebook and invited him to commit sexual acts.

“What we can say is that she was in contact when she was working,” said Quebec City police spokesperson Pierre Poirier.

“She had the opportunity to be in contact with the boy and that’s why we made this investigation.”

The school became suspicious of the relationship in April and alerted the authorities.

“It all started with some allegations about those crimes and after that there was an agreement involving the direction of youth protection, the service de police de la ville de Québec, the school board and after that we made the arrest,” Poirier explained.

Roy is currently out on bail under condition she does not contact the alleged victim, visit parks, schools, public pools or daycares.

She also has to stay away from minors, computers and the Internet.

The courts won’t even allow her to be with her own four children unless another adult is present.

“It’s disgusting,” said Cindy Roy, the parent of another student.

Another parent, Philippe Sauvageau, said he thought it was an isolated incident.

“I still trust the staff here, it’s a good daycare service,” he said.

The school board insists it acted swiftly.

It suspended the educator with pay in April and sent out a letter to parents.

“The school board reacted very rapidly,” spokesperson Jean-François Parent told Global News.

Still, police said the case was surprising.

The suspect is a mother of four who earned the trust of students and parents.

Poirier is urging children to be extra careful with social media.

“Be very very careful with the cell phone, the computer and all the social media,” he said.

“If you have any doubt, talk to your parents and talk to the police.”

Mélanie Roy will be back in court August 26th.
