CALGARY – A Calgary teacher has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for sexual interference and sexual exploitation while in a position of trust.
Adam MacPherson was a teacher at a private school when he had a three-year sexual relationship with a student.
The girl was 14 when the relationship began.
The teacher’s lawyer, Cory Wilson, says he’s incredibly remorseful, noting the judge found his apology to be genuine. MacPherson’s teaching career is over.
“There’s definitely a long-term impact beyond jail,” said Wilson. “His career as a teacher is definitely over. There’s also going to be a lengthy period of time in which he can’t be in any position of authority over any minor, so this is going to be a significant and life-long impact for Mr. MacPherson.”
The now 37-year-old teacher also infected the girl with an STI.
