EDMONTON – A new poll suggests a majority of Albertans support a royalty review but are split on a carbon tax.

The Mainstreet Technologies poll of 3,018 Albertans finds 51 per cent oppose a carbon tax while 65 per cent back a royalty review, with 46 per cent stating rates should go up.

The national public research firm says support for the royalty review is good news for Premier Rachel Notley but bad news for the oil and gas industry.

“With oil prices remaining below $60 per barrel, new investments in the Alberta oil patch may be risky in the short term until the new royalty is determined. In the long term, it’s unlikely this will affect the industry,” said Quito Maggi, president of Mainstreet Technologies.

The survey also indicates approval rating for Premier Notley is at 62 per cent, and climbing to 75 per cent in Edmonton. Sixty-two per cent of Calgarians either strongly approve or somewhat approve of Notley’s performance as premier thus far.

Forty-one per cent of those polled say they feel optimistic about the Alberta economy this year, while 45 per cent feel pessimistic and 13 per cent aren’t sure.
