Mayor Denis Coderre overlooked borough laws when building backyard pool

WATCH: Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre is in hot water after failing to obtain the proper building permits for his backyard pool when he installed it 11 years ago. Gloria Henriquez has more.

Mayor Denis Coderre is in trouble with the law after he built his backyard pool in 2004 without requesting a permit.

His first application was turned down due to zoning laws.

The bylaws were changed later that year, allowing him to build but Coderre didn’t apply for a new permit.

This has critics like Francois Limoges, Projet Montreal’s City Councillor for the Saint-Édouard district, worried about Coderre’s judgement.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I hope he doesn’t have other skeletons in his closet,” said Limoges.

But Coderre insists “it was an honest mistake.”

For Limoges, that’s no excuse.

“He had been a member of Parliament for almost a decade when it happened, he should have not ignored the law,” he told Global News.

The law is different for every borough, but the Montreal North website clearly states that a permit is required.

The borough of Montreal North discloses the rules residents need to follow to build a pool.

This is not the only run-in Coderre has had with the law. When he served as a member of Parliament in Ottawa in 2010, he received a notice because his lawn was unkempt.

Michel Lemay, a spokesperson for the borough of Montreal North, said Coderre will have a chance to rectify his pool permit issue.

The borough will soon send a notice of payment for the $51 he owes.
