Lone Liberal optimistic about NDP approach to health care

WATCH: Healthcare advocates, including Liberal lone wolf Dr. David Swann, are hopeful a change in government will repair some of the mistakes that were made under PC rule. Carolyn Kury De Castillo reports.

CALGARY- The only Liberal MLA left in Alberta’s legislature following the historic May 5 election, says he’s looking forward to possible changes to health care under Premier Rachel Notley’s NDP government.

David Swann, a trained medical doctor, has long been an outspoken critic of previous cabinet ministers overseeing the health portfolio. But on the day after Notley was sworn in as premier, the Liberal party leader said he hopes new health minister Sarah Hoffman will listen to experts and people working on the frontlines.

Swann says over the PC party’s 44 year reign over Alberta politics, their government created confusion, inefficiency and a culture of intimidation for health care workers.

“I see a real opportunity now with the Tories out and their entrenched attitudes and their protective kinds of responses,” said Swann. “That there will be an openness to change… I am very optimistic about that and I hope to have some influence on that and I presume I will.”

Swann isn’t the only one optimistic about how the NDP will handle the health file. On Monday, Sandra Azocar, the executive director of The Friends of Medicare, said she is hopeful the new health minister will be able to rebuild trust in how public healthcare is run.
