CALGARY – Rio and Ranger are the latest members of the Calgary Police Services’ Mounted Unit.
The equine officers were given their names following a public month-long poll; the names were chosen out of four other options, with over 1,700 people casting their vote.
Votes came in from across Canada, the United States, U.K., France, and Austria.
The horses came to Calgary from a ranch near Pincher Creek.
Rio and Ranger are replacing two veterans of the Mounted Unit, Cowboy and Bart, who have retired as the longest-serving members in 2010.
Voters also had the chance to enter to win a day with the Mounted Unit; Sara Korman, Jeff Marsh, Emma and MacKenzie Meyer are the lucky winners.
The Calgary Police Mounted Unit was formed in 1978 and has a total of six working horses.
