40-unit affordable housing project underway in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – Officials gathered Friday to celebrate the groundbreaking for a new affordable housing project Friday. The 40-unit apartment building will be built in the Pacific Heights neighbourhood.

Once constructed, the facility will consist of a common space, one-, two- and three-bedroom units located at 3333 Centennial Drive.

The federal and provincial governments are jointly contributing $2.4 million. In addition, the city contributed $750,000 while Westgate Heights Attainable Housing Inc. (WHAHI) contributed $3.45 million in mortgage financing and $1 million in land equity.

“For our part, the City of Saskatoon is providing financial incentives such as capital grants and property tax abatements; soon 40 families will have a place to call home and our city will be stronger because of it,” said Mayor Donald Atchison.

Ten of the affordable rental units will be reserved for single parent families.

WHAHI will own the building and provide financial crisis support, daycare and employment assistance for occupants.
