MONTREAL — Hardcore shoppers can now rejoice.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre announced downtown area stores now have the option to stay open 24/7.

The announcement comes after Jacques Daoust, Minister of Economy, Innovation and Export, gave downtown Montreal a special tourism status for a five-year period starting May 25, 2015 until May 2020.

Shops can now choose the hours and days they open their doors – without any restrictions.

The decision was made in order to boost tourism revenue.

“The extension of opening hours will allow traders to participate even more in the urban hustle and enjoy an exceptional traffic of tourists, conventioneers and festival-goers,” said Daoust in a press release.

The new touristic zone includes the downtown area, Île Notre-Dame (Casino de Montréal sector), Old Montréal and Chinatown as well as the Latin Quarter, the Village and the Quartier des Spectacles.

“We’re responding to the demand of stores and clients who are pushing for greater flexibility,” said Coderre.

The city ran an 18 month trial period in 2008.

The city has been trying to make the motion concrete since 2010.
