More than two weeks removed from the provincial election, many new MLA-elects are still adjusting to their new roles.  That includes both in Lethbridge – Maria Fitzpatrick and Shannon Phillips.

The two are hoping to bring new ideas to the Legislature.  But, barely two weeks into the new gig, the enormity of the situation is still setting in.

“Really an incredible thrill,” said Lethbridge East MLA-elect Maria Fitzpatrick. “That morning as I walked up to the Legislature, I took a picture, and I just thought ‘Oh my goodness’.”

That’s a sentiment echoed by Lethbridge West MLA-elect Shannon Phillips.

“Every once in a while when I’m in Edmonton, I look around at the Legislature, I listen to the Premier-designate speak, I have a little moment.  Just, ‘Wow, it’s amazing that we did this’.”

Although Phillips and Fitzpatrick won’t officially be sworn in until next month, there’s a lot of work to do between now and then.

“Because we’ve had a change in government, there’s a great deal to be done,” said Phillips.  “A lot of organization, in addition to use setting up our offices here in Lethbridge.”

The Premier-designate and her 11 cabinet ministers will be officially sworn in on Sunday, and it’s believed Phillips has a good chance at earning a cabinet position.  She isn’t offering any hints, saying Albertans will have to stay tuned to find out.

“I haven’t heard anything from the Premier-designate,” said Phillips.  “It’s up to here, those decisions remain in (her) hands and we will all find out about them on Sunday.”
