Chestermere house severely damaged by fire

WATCH ABOVE: A Chestermere family of three is without a home after a fire ripped through their home. Jenna Freeman reports.

CHESTERMERE – A house fire in Chestermere forced a family from their home on Thursday.

Firefighters from Chestermere and the Rocky View County rushed to the semi-detached home along Rainbow Falls Green around 1:20 a.m.

The homeowner tells Global News it was his barking dogs that actually alerted him to the fire, allowing him and his two teenage daughters to get out safely.

“The dogs were barking, I got up and I could see fire,” said Darcy. “Got everybody out of the house, called 911.”

He says he then went to his neighbour’s house to alert them to the fire.

Investigators say the fire started on the back deck and eventually spread to the attic, causing significant damage.

“These [semi-detached] buildings are designed to have a firewall in between the two houses,” explains says Deputy Chief Richard Miller from the Chestermere Fire Department. “Basically, the firewall did its job. It stopped the fire from spreading to the other side of the property.”

The house also sustained water damage.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
