REGINA – Saskatchewan has opened up its consultation to find out who should be able to own farmland. Land ownership became a hot topic as prices rose and when the Canada Pension Plan bought some Saskatchewan land.
Some say that competition from large investment groups like the CPP drive prices up, putting land out of the reach of aspiring farmers.
Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart says getting input from the public will help the government understand who should be allowed to own farmland in the province.

In mid-April, the government said trusts with more than 10 beneficiaries, pension plans, and administrators of pension plans could not buy land while the consultation is underway.
The consultation runs until August 10.
