TORONTO – Ontario Provincial Police are sounding the alarm after impaired driving charges jumped 37 per cent over the Victoria Day long weekend compared to last year.
A total of 37 charges were laid as opposed to 27 a year ago, according to the OPP.
Meanwhile in Toronto, 19 people were arrested for impaired driving, a slight drop from 21 the year prior.
On Saturday, Ryan Powless, 29, of Hamilton was killed after the vehicle he was in was struck by a pickup truck driving the wrong way on Highway 403 in Burlington.
Ricardo Cabral, 35, of Brampton faces numerous charges including impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving.
Also on Saturday night an out of control ice cream truck drove onto the lawn on a residential street. The truck clipped several cars, but only the driver suffered minor injuries.
The driver is facing charges of impaired driving.
Police arrested a 23-year-old man Tuesday at 2:30 a.m. after he was seen driving the wrong way down Bovaird Drive near Highway 410 in Brampton. He was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, causing several vehicles on the road to take “evasive action.”
The Brampton man was arrested at the scene for impaired driving and faces multiple charges. Luckily no one was injured in that incident.
