EDMONTON — Rain or shine, one outdoor Edmonton pool is welcoming the unofficial start of summer. Mill Creek Outdoor Pool will be open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“It’s pretty exciting. It’s officially summertime,” said Michelle Bowman, facility foreman at Mill Creek. “Hopefully the weather cooperates. It is Alberta, but we’ll be open, so come on down for the first swim of the season!”

The weather may not cooperate. The forecast calls for wind and rain in the morning. The rain should let up in the afternoon, but the winds of 20 km/h or more will stick around, and the temperature is only expected to reach 9°C.

Bowman said the pool water will be heated. Visitors can bring their own food, or buy some from the pool’s concession.

While Mill Creek will be open, water-lovers will have to wait a little longer to visit the city’s other outdoor pools.

The city is aiming to open other outdoor pools soon: the Queen Elizabeth pool on May 28, Fred Broadstock Outdoor Pools by May 31, and the Oliver Outdoor Pool on June 14.

The Borden Park Outdoor Pool will remain closed this year due to renovations, and isn’t expected to be up and running until 2017.

Mill Creek will be open regardless of the weather on Saturday but afterwards will follow the city’s inclement weather policy, which only allows outdoor pools to open if the temperature is above 18°C.

The City of Edmonton’s pool website will be updated each day.

“For each pool, they’ll have a notification saying the hours of operation for each specific day,” said Bowman.

Pool hours will be extended this year with Fred Broadstock, Oliver and Queen Elizabeth pools open until 8 p.m. instead of 7.
