Female bus driver sexually assaulted in East Vancouver

The union representing Metro Vancouver bus drivers is offering a $2,000 reward to help find a man who sexually assaulted a female bus driver.

The woman was driving in East Vancouver on New Year’s Day when she was groped by a male passenger who fled after the attack, which happened on the No. 22 Knight Street route at around 7 a.m., according to the Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 president, Don MacLeod.

“The union is appalled by the assault,” MacLeod said in a news release, explaining that police are investigating and have video tapes from the bus security camera.

“This is a very disturbing incident,” MacLeod said. “We hope this $2,000 reward and the bus security camera videotape will lead to a quick arrest.”

Physical assaults on drivers of both sexes are “an ongoing concern,” he continued. “Sexual assaults against female drivers are especially troubling, with this attack being the fourth reported incident since 2009.”

Women make up about 12 per cent of the 3,600 bus drivers employed by Coast Mountain Bus Company, a subsidiary of TransLink, MacLeod said.
