Grizzly bear encounter forces closure of several popular Banff trails

CALGARY – Parks Canada officials say they’ve had to close a number of trails on Tunnel Mountain for safety reasons following a frightening incident between a hiker and a grizzly bear on Wednesday evening.

In a news release, officials say the hiker surprised the animal while it was feeding. The bear ran out from a bush and came within five metres of the hiker. Fortunately, the hiker was not injured.

Officials also say the risk of grizzly bear encounters is high right now because the animals have recently come out of hibernation and are focused on finding food.

Park officials have put closure signs and tape around impacted trails. Anyone caught entering the area could face fines up to $25,000.

Surprise encounters can lead bears to act defensively. To avoid bear encounters, Parks Canada encourages people to take the following precautions:

  • Ensure things like food, garbage, pet food and dirty dishes are secure
  • Pay attention for bears or signs of bears
  • Make noise when hiking and cycling
  • Keep small children nearby
  • Keep all pets on leash
  • Carry bear spray and know how to use it
  • Maintain at least 100 metres between you and any bear

If you encounter a bear while visiting Banff National Park, officials ask you immediately report the sighting to the Visitor Centre at 224 Banff Avenue of by calling Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.
