PICTURE THIS: Winnipegger uses steel, fire to create incredible images

WINNIPEG — A whisk, a dog leash and super fine steel wool is not typically what you would find in a photographer’s kit. However, using this assortment of common household items, Winnipegger Kyle Schappert likes to light up the night sky in unique ways.

Schappert lights up Manitoba scenes brilliantly using long camera exposures.

Safety is obviously a consideration; steel wool can cause cuts and scrapes on unprotected hands. Schappert ensures there’s no risk of an accidental fire in the locations he chooses for his shoots and warns the technique isn’t for everyone.

“It’s definitely not something you should be trying without considering safety, because it is dangerous. You’re playing with fire — it’s pyrotechnics.”
