TORONTO – Safety concerns have prompted the Toronto Transit Commission to cut its bicycle rack spaces in half on some of its buses.
The restriction applies to articulated buses and the new Nova 40-foot buses scheduled for operation later this spring.
Current racks that can hold up to two bikes have now been reduced to just one.
“Last fall, the Ontario Ministry of Labour ordered the TTC to review sight lines as it relates to bike racks on some bus types in its fleet,” the TTC said in a media release.
The TTC said bicycles can be brought on board if there is enough space and during off-peak periods.
Riders who use the rack must still remove large objects, accessories and loose items as to not impede the driver’s sight lines.
