WATCH ABOVE: A survivor of domestic violence was given the surprise of a lifetime Monday night.

TORONTO – A story that could have ended terribly horrific, when a Tampa woman was stabbed 32 times, has instead been given an incredibly sweet moment in the spotlight.

Melissa Dohme was stabbed 32 times by a former boyfriend in 2012. There was apparently so much blood that “you couldn’t tell she was blonde,” one of the first responders said at the timeHer story was so dramatic it was even featured in an episode of CBS’ 48 Hours that is available to watch online.

Three years later, Dohme is an advocate for Hands Across The Bay to help victims of domestic violence and is in a relationship with Cameron Hill, one of the very EMT’s that saved her.

She was under the impression that she had been invited to throw out Monday night’s first pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays game for the work she has done.

She was certainly wrong.

Hill came running on to the field after Dohme had reached the mound and presented her with the official game ball.

On the baseball he wrote, “Will you marry me?,” and offered up a beautiful engagement ring.

A stunned Dohme said yes and went on to throw the first pitch to Hill behind the plate. It was a ball that wildly missed the mark – but just like how he saved her once before – her new fianceé snatched it up and then pretended it was a strike.
