TORONTO – A hammer-wielding man was shot by police in midtown Manhattan Wednesday morning.

The suspect was shot after trying to hit a female New York police officer with a hammer.

One officer fired four times, striking the suspect twice. Police said the man is in critical but stable condition at a hospital.

Dozens of officers and emergency workers rushed to the scene near Penn Station just before 10 a.m.

It is unclear if the officer was injured.

Officers had been searching for the suspect who police say attacked at least four people with a hammer earlier this week.

On Monday night, a 34-year-old woman was struck in a park. A few hours later, a 28-year-old woman in Union Square noticed a man looking at her before he pulled a hammer out of a bag and bashed her head.

The second attack happened about 10 minutes later when a 33-year-old was struck from behind. Officers later discovered that a fourth attack happened earlier Monday in a different part of the city. A 20-year-old man was injured.
