Ice on Whyte kicks off just as temperatures dropping

EDMONTON – Not many Edmontonians are happy the mercury is about to plummet, but the cold temperatures are good news for the Ice on Whyte festival.

After being delayed by a day because of our warm weather, 10-day festival is now underway. It features a wide array of ice carvings created by artists from around the globe, and stunning snow sculptures, including a slide for those who want a chilly ride.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

While the looming colder temperatures are good for the sculptures, organizers don’t want it to get too chilly.

“You want the ice to be at a reasonable temp and of course we want people to be comfortable enough to enjoy themselves,” says the Ice on Whyte assistant producer, Erin Edwards.

“However, we’ve got our warmup tent on site and there’s entertainment and warm beverages for Youth Emergency Shelter by donation, so I think anyone who comes out is going to be alright.”

For those who want to take in the winter wonderland, it runs until January 22nd.

Its location is a little different from previous eyars, though, as it has moved further north, to the end of Steele Park and the Strathcona Community Centre. A second display is also set up at the west lawn of the Legislature grounds, with the High Level streetcar offering free rides between the two spots.
