WATCH: 8-foot long alligator gets stuck under car in Florida

It may have been in search for some food, but perhaps it was looking for shelter.

We may never find out why the alligator crossed the road, because it got stuck under a car in the process.

A Florida woman noticed a two-and-a-half metre long alligator making its way towards traffic in Fort Myers on Monday.

In an effort to protect it from the busy road, Alana Goodwin told Naples Daily News that she pulled over to create a barrier between the reptile and the traffic.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The next thing she knew, the gator was under her car and had wedged itself into a tizzy.

Lizzette Roman saw the entire scene unfold and helped block traffic until animal control arrived.

“I called 911 and it took them about 13 rings to answer. They said I wasn’t the only caller,” Roman told Naples Daily News.

Plenty of photos and videos of the scene were taken by news cameras and curious bystanders. The images show a rather frisky gator wrestle with animal control officers as they attempted to pull it out from under Goodwin’s car.

After several minutes, authorities were able to remove the alligator from the road and take it to safety as the crowd cheered and applauded.

Goodwin says that as a Florida native, she wasn’t surprised by the incident at all.

“I worked for the Sheriff’s Office for 20 years so I know this is a regular happenstance,” she said. “We’ve had plenty of people with gators under their cars.”
