Convicted murderer who escaped from prison back behind bars

WATCH: Surrey RCMP are asking for your help in locating a convicted killer now suspected of a string of robberies Catherine Urquhart reports.

VANCOUVER – A convicted murderer who escaped from a minimum security unit at Mission Institution is back in custody.

Shawn Merrick, 43, escaped on March 31. He was serving a sentence for second degree murder and robbery and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.

Police say Merrick was captured without incident in the 21900-block of 44A Avenue in Langley on May 13. Air 1 observed him hiding on the roof of a home as various police units closed in.

Merrick has now been transported back to prison to finish serving his sentence and has been charged with six new counts of robbery.

He was wanted for two counts of robbery allegedly stemming from two incidents that occurred on April 17 in Surrey.

RCMP say at about 1 p.m. that day they responded to calls of a man attempting to rob a bank in the 15900-block of Fraser Highway. He was not successful, but at about 1:35 p.m., RCMP received another report of a robbery in the 15100-block of 101 Avenue. The suspect is believed to be the same in both attempts.

Merrick was also an alleged suspect in multiple robberies that recently took place in the Langley area.

The Canadian Bankers Association has also offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of this man. Police say the viable tips will be provided to the organization.
