Former Bombers president beats city councillor for Tory nomination

WINNIPEG – Jim Bell, the former president of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ football club, beat Coun. Jeff Browaty to become the Kildonan-St. Paul Conservative Party candidate in the next federal election.

Bell won the backing of current MP Joy Smith in the nomination race. Voting took place Sunday evening.

The federal election is scheduled to take place Oct. 19. Smith announced in January that she wouldn’t seek a fifth term in office.

Longtime Winnipeg politician MaryAnn Mihychuk, a former provincial NDP cabinet minister and former school trustee, is running for the Liberal Party in Kildonan-St. Paul, while former school trustee and nurse Suzanne Hrynyk is running for the NDP.

Browaty will continue as city councillor for North Kildonan.
