EDMONTON – The family of a St. Albert couple missing in Nepal since last week’s devastating earthquake has confirmed the couple is dead.

Louise Bentley says her brother Bruce Macmillan and his wife Kathy Macmillan were hiking in the Langtang Valley when an avalanche hit following the deadly quake.

The couple’s family posted the following statement on the Find Bruce and Kathy Macmillan Facebook Page Saturday morning:

“It is with our deepest regret and sorrow that we now advise you that our sister Kathy Macmillan (Smith), and our brother Bruce Macmillan have both perished in the Nepalese earthquake. Bruce and Kathy were seen to be hiking in the area that was totally buried in the avalanche at the village of Chyamki in the Langtang valley, surrounded by 7,000 metre peaks and one of the most beautiful and serene places in the world.

Their trip marked a 35 year anniversary to revisit Nepal, an area visited shortly after they were married. Kathy and Bruce passed away while travelling the world, their passion from the moment they were married.

They are survived by their sons Jay and Fraser. Two mature and loving men, both were fortunate to spend quality time together prior to the Nepal disaster. Jay and Fraser appreciate, and will continue to appreciate how precious those days together were.

Our deepest and most sincere thank you to all those who contributed to, and acknowledged our desperate search. Almost 6,000 people have aided us through our “Find Bruce & Kathy” page and many others with the rescue efforts for missing Nepalese travellers. This earthquake has been an enormous tragedy impacting lives across the globe. It has made ours, and the world a smaller place.

Our loving family has since come together and we are planning a public tribute for Bruce and Kathy in the future.”

The Macmillan’s family is asking people who knew the couple to share stories about them on the community page.

Authorities say the death toll from last Saturday’s earthquake has now climbed to more than 6,800.
