WINNIPEG — Just days after Winnipeg’s homeless community was shaken by a string of killings downtown, family of one of the victims gathered Thursday night to remember him.

Stony Bushie, 48, is one of three men police allege were murdered by John Paul Ostamas. Ostamas is currently behind bars awaiting a court appearance.

About a dozen people attended the wake Thursday evening at the Aboriginal Funeral Chapel.

People who knew Bushie are still in shock after he was killed while visiting Winnipeg from Little Grand Rapids for a medical appointment.

The killings put Winnipeg’s homeless community on alert.

Family friend Henry Neufeld led the service and said Bushie’s family had very strong faith.

“His parents were very committed to the faith, to the Lord, and they tried the most to walk that way and live their life of faith. I remember that quite well. I was often in their home praying with them and so forth,” said Neufeld.
