TORONTO – Two suspects, a man and a woman, have been arrested in a German town north-west of Frankfurt as a result of an investigation into an alleged terrorist plot.

According to a report from German newspaper Die Welt, police conducted a raid at an apartment in Oberursel late Wednesday evening and seized large amounts of chemical materials, explosives, an assault rifle and ammunition.

Police have reportedly been targeting the suspects after they allegedly purchased large amounts of hydrogen peroxide and alcohol at a local hardware store in March.

It is believed one of the suspects has links to the Salafi jihadist movement and the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

The German newspaper report said police decided to move in after one of the suspects was observed exploring a forest near Oberursel where a bicycle race is expected to take place May 1.
