Competitive spirit to losing weight

It is the Kelowna version of the Biggest Loser.

While gyms are always extra busy after the New Year with people motivated to lose unwanted pounds, Global Fitness Center in Kelowna was bursting at the seams Thursday night as dozens of people gathered for a chance at some free personal training.

The 2012 edition of Get it back, Give it back program saw more than 90 people apply, each of whom had to write a short essay on why they wanted to participate in the program.

The goal of the program is to help people work off the pounds and maintain an active and health lifestyle.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Darcia Fenton, general manager at Global Fitness, says program was designed to attract people who would normally not sign up for a gym membership.

“Fitness is fun,” Fenton said.

The applicants will be whittled down to 45 people, who all want to lose at least 20 pounds during the three month program.

Participants are divided into teams and will receive complimentary fitness membership, free personal training sessions, weekly challenges and nutritional information.

Motivational and emotional support is also provided.

“I would like to lose about 35 pounds,” said applicant Chris Collinson. “I would like to be healthy and get a handle on what I put in my body on an ongoing basis.

“I saw what happened to my brother last year,” said applicant Anya Gertenaar. “He lost more than the weight of his four year daughter so that was a huge inspiration to me.”

Another aspect of the program is giving back to the community: applicants must sign a commitment agreement that includes volunteering in planned charity events each month.

By the end of the three month program, the person who has lost the most weight will receive a one year free membership to Global Fitness as well as complimentary clothes and other amenities from local businesses.

The 45 applicants will be chosen by January 13.
