WINNIPEG – If your day seems extra bright, you might want to thank a Canadian Scout for that — they’ll be out and about this week doing good in their communities.

Scouts across Canada are participating in Good Turn Week for the sixth year in a row. Designed in a similar vein to Random Acts of Kindness, scouts and members of the community are encouraged to perform good deeds throughout the week.

Rover Scout Victoria Knapp stopped by Global Winnipeg’s Morning News to discuss the week and what good deeds some Manitoban scouts will perform for it.

“Good Turn Week is just an initiative that is driven by the youth in scouting to promote community members and scouting members alike to just go out and do something good for someone else,” Knapp said. “It will increase their own happiness and the happiness of someone else.”

There’s nothing to small or too big when it comes to performing a good turn, said Knapp.

She cited donating to Siloam Mission, volunteering at Winnipeg Harvest, buying a coffee for someone or just holding the door open as some of the good turns people can perform. One of the good turns the Scouts will perform this week involves a piece of equipment they’re quite familiar with – a canoe. “Canoes play into scouting because we are very outdoor-orientated. We like doing camping and canoe trips,” said Knapp.

“So we’re going to bring a little bit of the wilderness into the City. We’re going to fill our canoes full of food, games and clothing. And we’re going to portage — which is essentially carrying the canoe — from City Hall to Siloam Mission, and then donate and present all the food to Siloam Mission.”

The 18th Brandon Scouts also filled canoes with good for Helping Hands soup kitchen in that city.

Knapp said in the past, she has made sandwiches for Siloam Mission and volunteered at Winnipeg Harvest during Good Turn Week.

“Everything that you would pretty much want someone to do to you, do to someone else,” said Knapp. “That’s a good turn.”

Knapp said she loves Good Turn Week, but the good deeds shouldn’t stop just because the week is over.

“Good Turn Week is just sort of meant to kick off good turns to carry on throughout the rest of the year,” she said. “We just want to make sure everyone is doing their best to make the community a better place.”

The Scouts are using social media to reach out to people. Not only are scouts looking for people to donate that way, but they’re using social media to show what good turns people have performed.

Using the hashtag #GoodTurn, people are encouraged to post on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram the good deeds they — or someone else — have done.

Some of the good turns posted on scouts.ca include baking cakes, cleaning gutters, picking up garbage and boosting a dead car battery.
