HALIFAX – Film professionals in Nova Scotia aren’t the only ones worried by the recent changes to the province’s film tax credit.
Small business owners told a news conference today they would also be negatively affected, with some losing as much as 45 per cent of their income if film companies were to take their business elsewhere.
Jo-Ann Grant, director of the Chester Chamber of Commerce, credited the film industry with bringing in more than $1 million in revenue annually to her area of the province alone.
She says the new program announced Thursday by the government after talks with the film industry doesn’t solve the problem because uncertainty over its long-term ramifications will dissuade companies from filming in the province.
The new regime is similar to Alberta’s and would provide refundable base funding to all production costs, as well as other small incentives.
Though Screen Nova Scotia originally said they were satisfied with the new deal, some Nova Scotia filmmakers are questioning whether it will be enough.
