Significant earthquake reported off coast of B.C.

WATCH ABOVE: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake was reported off the B.C. coast on Friday morning. There are no reports of damage or injuries.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of British Columbia Friday morning. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded the quake at 6.2.

The quake struck 186 km west, south west of Bella Bella, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A tsunami is not expected in the region.

Residents in Bella Bella, Smithers, the Comox Valley, Metlakatla and Kitimat say they felt the quake and heard some loud rumbling.

Earthquakes Canada reported a “seismic event” of magnitude 5.4 off the coast of Village of Queen Charlotte just before 7 a.m. PDT.

The event was upgraded to a 6.1-magnitude earthquake.

There’s no immediate reports for damage or injuries.

Smaller “seismic events” occurred on Friday following the initial 6.1- magnitude earthquake.

Earthquakes Canada detected a 4.0 tremor in the Village of Queen Charlotte region just before 9:00 a.m., while another 4.0-magnitude seismic event was detected in Terrace region just before 10:00 a.m.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck in northern Idaho Thursday night. The earthquake was felt by residents living in the Kootenays in B.C. No damage was reported.

Last month, a 5.1- magnitude quake struck near Port Hardy.

Earthquakes Canada later downgraded the March 25 quake to a 4.8 on the Richter scale.

In March, B.C. Auditor General Russ Jones said British Columbians are at a significant risk if a catastrophic earthquake were to occur in the near future.

In a new report, Jones said Emergency Management BC (EMBC), which is tasked with preparing the government’s response to an earthquake, is not adequately prepared and that neither the province nor EMBC has made preparing for one a priority.

Last year, the Insurance Bureau of Canada released a study that suggested we are not prepared physically or financially for a major earthquake in British Columbia. It estimated the total economic loss after a magnitude 9 earthquake in the region off the coast of Vancouver Island to be $75 billion.
