Speed and alcohol considered factors in fatal Deerfoot crash

CALGARY – Investigators say speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in a fatal crash on Deerfoot Trail on Wednesday.

It happened just after 9:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Southland Drive S.E.

Police say the driver was travelling at a high rate of speed in a Nissan Maxima when she lost control. The vehicle rolled off the road for about 80 metres before coming to rest on its roof on the Maple Ridge Golf Course.

The driver, a 33-year-old woman, had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was rushed to the Foothills Medical Centre with serious injuries.

A female passenger in the vehicle was ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.
