Greenest school in B.C. celebrates Earth Day

It’s a distinction more than a decade in the making.

Haldane Elementary School in Chase, B.C., is officially the greenest school in Canada, according to Seeds Connection.

Students from the public school have been taking part in environmental initiatives since 1992. But just in time for Earth Day, they reached the milestone of 10,000 green projects and the title of a Green X school – the first in the country.

“They can’t get into the room fast enough,” says teacher Nancy Mueller of her students in the Green Kids Program.

The students take part in many activities, including spray-painting fish near sewer drains to prevent dumping of litter and chemicals, as well as a worm composting and recycling program.

The school’s principal Mark Orr says the students have adopted being green as part of everyday school life, even rushing to power down all the electronics and lights in the school at the end of each week.

“Keeping the environment isn’t just for us, it’s for the animals too,” says student Carson Mickelson.

The Haldane students are planting a tree to mark Earth Day – just one of many more green initiatives to come.
