Little boy meets paramedics who saved his life years ago

WATCH ABOVE: Five years ago, a baby boy rushed into the world, but without city paramedics rushing to help, he wouldn’t have survived. Kendra Slugoski was there when he reunited with the team.

EDMONTON – An amazing story of survival came to a wonderful resolution Wednesday. Six paramedics reunited with a young boy who they resuscitated five years ago when he was born prematurely.

On the morning of May 15, 2010, Megan Nelson went into labour at home when she was 24 weeks pregnant. Her family called 911. When paramedics arrived, her son had already been born but was not breathing.

“We walked in, and there, on his mother’s belly, was this tiny little baby,” recalled paramedic Seth Dodman.

Paramedics performed CPR on the one-pound, eight-ounce newborn.

“There was a very tall paramedic on the living room floor, doing chest compressions on this tiny baby,” said Nelson.

“As soon as they got a pulse, they lifted him and carried him out of the house.”

The Nelson family said doctors told them their son Talon only had a 10 per cent chance of making it through the night. He was taken to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, where he remained in pediatric intensive care for four months.

Talon is now a healthy, soon to be five-year-old boy. His mother requested the reunion.

“We wanted to find and meet the people who saved my son,” explained Nelson. She said her son knows these paramedics are heroes.

“To know that he’s alive and doing well and that we were a part of that…that is exactly our purpose and why we do what we do,” added Dodman.

“It’s refreshing. This is the first time this has happened in 17 years,” said paramedic Brendan Mulholland.

“They put life into my grandchild,” said Shelly Nelson, Talon’s grandma. “You can never repay that, you can thank them until you turn blue in the face but it will never be enough. To actually meet them and give them a hug and thank them for everything, it’s just amazing.”

Talon will be celebrating his 5th birthday on May 15.
