WINNIPEG – The city’s executive policy committee has voted to limit a plan to run a road under the Perimeter Highway between East St. Paul and North Kildonan – but their vote may not matter.
If Raleigh Street, which currently is split by the Perimeter, is pushed through, underpass traffic should be limited to emergency vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, the city’s executive policy committee decided Wednesday. Their recommendation will now go to city council.
However, the province can decide to proceed with the project even if the city opposes it.
No city funds will go towards the underpass construction.
The rural municipality of East St. Paul and the provincial government created the plan to build an underpass at the intersection, but residents of North Kildonan and their city representative, Coun. Jeff Browaty, oppose the plan.
“This is detrimental to our neighbourhood,” said Cathy Cox, a North Kildonan resident.
The road goes from fields to a largely single-family residential area on the Winnipeg side of the Perimeter. It’s a mix of fields and large single-family homes on the East St. Paul side.
