kating’s Johnny Weir marks New Year’s Eve by getting married in New York
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Figure skating star Johnny Weir celebrated the New Year by tying the knot.
The three-time U.S. champion married Atlanta lawyer Victor Voronov in a Friday morning ceremony before both men’s parents at the New York City courthouse. The two are planning a July wedding, but Weir said in a Twitter post Saturday “all the official stuff is done now!” He thanked fans in another post late Monday, saying the well wishes mean a lot.
“I am so happy to have found my match,” the two-time Olympian said in a statement. “Marrying Victor has been the greatest moment in my life and I will work very hard to make him proud and happy.”
The two are using the surname “Weir-Voronov,” but the skater will continue to use Weir professionally. Though Weir has not competed since the Vancouver Olympics, where he finished sixth, he has not ruled out a comeback for the 2014 Games in Sochi.
Weir came out last January in his autobiography, “Welcome to My World.” He had previously avoided questions about his sexuality, saying he wanted people to see him “for who I am, not what I am.”
